Key Concept
• Endocrine system is composed of glands that secrete
different types of hormones that affect almost every cell,
organ, and function of our body.

• Hormones are your body's chemical messengers. They

travel in your bloodstream to tissues or organs. They work
slowly, over time, and affect many different processes,
including: Growth and development.

ENDOCRINE
made SYSTEM
The endocrine system is
up of glands that make
hormones. Hormones are the
body's chemical messengers.
They carry information and
instructions from one set of
cells to another.
What Are the Parts of the
Endocrine System?
The major glands that make up
the endocrine system are the:

• Hypothalamus
• Pituitary
• Thyroid
• Parathyroids
• Adrenals
• Pineal gland
• Ovaries
• Testes

these two glands also make

ESTROGEN
It helps develop and maintain both the
reproductive system and female
characteristics, such as breasts and
pubic hair.
3 types of
Estrogen
• Estrone
• Estradiol
• Estriol
Progesterone
Is a hormone released by the corpus
luteum in the ovary. It plays important
roles in the menstrual cycle and in
maintaining the early stages of
pregnancy.
Prolactin
Also known as lactotropinI, a hormone
made by the pituitary gland, a small gland at
the base of the brain. It’s responsible for
lactation, certain breast tissue development
and milk production.

such as:

In the modern environment one is exposed to various stressful

conditions. Stress can lead to changes in the serum level of many
hormones including glucocorticoids, catecholamines, growth
hormone and prolactin. Some of these changes are necessary for
the fight or flight response to protect oneself. Some of these
stressful responses can lead to endocrine disorders like Graves’
disease, gonadal dysfunction, psychosexual dwarfism and obesity.
Stress can also alter the clinical status of many preexisting
endocrine disorders such as precipitation of adrenal crisis and
thyroid storm.
