A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

2 YEAR COLLEGE

I. Objectives
At the end of the discussion, the students will be able to:

a. Explain that hormones helps to tell our body what to do.

b. Label the different glands in the human endocrine system.
c. Identify the major endocrine glands in the human body and their function.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Endocrine glands and their hormone
b. Year Level: 2ND YEAR
c. Reference: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology second edition pages 272-292
d. Materials: Visual aids, activity sheets, box, real objects and printed pictures.
e. Valuing: Appreciation, cooperativeness and intellectual honesty.

III. Procedure

Daily Routine (10 MINUTES)

1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance

A. Review of the past lesson (15 MINUTES)

Before we proceed to our new lesson, may we have a Yes Ma’am!

short recap about our lesson yesterday?

What was our last discussion all about? We discussed something about The nervous
system.

Correct! Please tell us what s the basic unit of the The nerve cell.
nervous sytem?

The nerve cells are called neurons. Now, what is the It has special ability to carry signals or
main function of neurons? impulses.

When a receptor such as an organ perceives a

stimulus, the impulse is sent to the brain by sensory The brain processes the information and
neurons then, transmitted by nerve cells, When the commands an effector such as a muscle or
message reaches the brain what happened next? an organ to respond by the use of neurons.

Very good! Do you have any questions for that?

None ma’am!
Now, lets play a game first.
Ok ma’am!

B. Motivation (15 MINUTES)

Now, This game is called the “thinking what’s inside

the box”. (answers may vary)
Are you familiar with this game?

ADVANCE PREPARATION:
The teacher will make a box with secret objects
inside. Have all students to participate.

DIRECTIONS:

Students will be divided into two groups. Each group All students will participate.
will choose two representatives. The representatives
will go in front and guess the objects inside the box
using their hands. Once the teacher says ready, it is
the time for the representatives to put their one hand
on the box. The first pair of student will coordinate
and communicate to each other to guess and feel the
secret object inside. They will wear an eye cover to
avoid coaching by their group mates. The second pair
of students will continue to decode the objects as
well. Student should say aloud their guesses to hear
by the whole class. The group who guessed three
correct names of the objects will be the winner.

SECRET OBJECTS:
Hormones are part of the endocrine system.
Our topic for today is all about the
Based on the game that we played do you have any endocrine system.
idea on what will be our topic for today?

That’s correct! But specifically our topic for today is

all about the endocrine glands and their hormones.
The endocrine system is composed of
Do you have any idea on what is the endocrine glands that secrete different types of
system? hormones that affect almost every cell organ
and function of our body.

Very Good! It is essential in regulating growth and

development, metabolism, as well as reproductive
processes and mood. Endocrine glands secrete chemicals known
as hormones into the bloodstreams , which
How does your endocrine system function? carries them throughout the body.

Hormones are chemical secreted by the

endocrine glands which carries instructions
So, what are hormones? to the body.

When a hormone in the body reaches the target organ,

it produces a notable effect. None maam!

Very good! Is there any questions?

Now, lets study the different endocrine glands, their

location , hormones released and their function.

*The teacher will post the table list of all the major
glands in the body, with their function, location and
hormones they released.
C. Lesson Proper (2 HOURS)

PRE ACTIVITY:

The teacher will discuss the function of the endocrine The students will participate to the
system, the endocrine glands and their hormones. discussion and the activity.

The teacher will explain the instructions in the

activity.

GLAND LOCATION HORMONES FUNCTION

RELEASED

Pituitary At the base of the Oxytocin, Stimulates growth,

brain Vasopressin, growth and controls the
hormone, function of the other
adrenocorticotropic glands
hormone, polactin,
luteinizing hormone,
follicle stimulating
hormone.

Thyroid Below the voice box Thyroxin, Calcitonin Regulates body

metabolism, and
causes storage of
calcium in bones

Parathyroid In the neck Parathyromone Controls the calcium

levels in your body,
and normalizes the
bone growth

Thymus In front of the hear Thymosin Enables the body to

produce certain
antibodies

Adrenal On top of the kidneys Adrenaline Prepares the body for

action, controls the
heart rate and
breathing in times of
emergency.

Pancreas Between the kidneys Insulin and Glucagon Regulates blood sugar
levels

Reproductive
-testes (males) Lower abdomen Androgen, Control maturation
Testosterone and male
characteristics

-ovaries(females) Lower abdomen Estrogen, Influence female

progesterone traits, and support
reproductive function.
ACTIVITY:

PROCEDURE:
Study each picture that depicts the involvement of a particular gland in the endocrine system.
Write down the name of the endocrine gland and explain its effect, according to its function.

1. Athletes burn up calories 2. A pregnant woman 3. A boy running away from

during exercise danger

4.a kid growing taller 5. A sick person in bed 6. A girl eating sweets

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Q1. Which gland of the endocrine and nervous system controls the other gland of the body?
Q2. How will you differentiate thyroid and parathyroid glands in terms of location and function?
Q3. If a persons blood sugar level becomes unstable, what glands might be involved in the
problem?
Q4. How important is the thymus glands in keeping your body free from diseases?
Q5. What might happened to a person born without a thymus gland?

TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY

POST ACTIVITY: Regulates body metabolism, and causes storage

 Discussion of the activity of calcium in bone

In the activity have you able to identify what

kind of gland and its effect and function does
each picture depicts?
Lets answer, the first one the pregnant woman.

Very good! How about the second one a boy

running away from danger?

A kid growing taller?

A sick person in bed?

The last one a girl eating sweets?

Is there any questions?

Very good! I was happy you are able to finish

your activity. Pass your papers.

D. GENERALIZATION: (30 MINUTES)

Now lets look back, what is the endocrine

system?

Very good so what are hormones?

Very good! What are the major endocrine

glands in the body and their function?

Regulates body metabolism, and causes storage

PITUITARY of calcium in bones

PARATHYROID Controls the calcium levels in your body, and

normalizes the bone growth

THYMUS Enables the body to produce certain antibodies

ADRENAL Prepares the body for action, controls the heart

rate and breathing in times of emergency.

PANCREAS Regulates blood sugar levels

TESTES Control maturation and male characteristics

OVARIES Influence female traits, and support

reproductive function.
E. APPLICATION: (10 MINUTES)

PART I.
Directions: Students will go in front and label the different major endocrine gland in the body.

PART II. (20 MINUTES)

Students will watch an endocrine video and recognize the name of hormones. Using printed
emoticons they will illustrate their reactions.
