The Nervous System

System Functioning
The Nervous System is a large group of neuron cells that transmit signals to
other parts of the body according to the instructions given by the brain, allowing the
body to react and feel. It includes the Peripheral and Central Nervous Systems, each
with their own set of neurons and organs.
The system relies on
lesser systems to
control separate bodily
functions
Organs
Brain
receives information from spinal cord and reacts according to situation
Consists of parts called the cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, and
diencephalon (each controlling separate body functions depending
on the part)
Spinal Cord
receives information from other organs and sends to brain
consists of 31 segments, each holding groups of spinal nerves
Neurons
a nerve cell that transmits nerve impulses to other body parts using
axons
axons are fibers that connect neurons and send away information
from the cell to organs

Systems
There are several differing classifications of nerves within the Nervous System,
each containing unique organs and functions.
Main systems
Central
containing the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral
containing the Autonomic and Somatic systems
allowing senses to run from spinal cord to organs
Lesser systems
Somatic
carries fibers that pass sensory information from the Peripheral System
to organs
Autonomic
contains nerves that allow internal organs to function
Diseases

Diseases may affect the nervous system in different ways, depending on the
illness. Symptoms commonly affect the system by directly or indirectly harming the
nerves and brain:
Cancer
nausea/vomiting, confusion, possible seizures, headaches
Influenza (Flu)
intense headaches and pains throughout the body, restlessness
Parkinsons Disease
autonomic dysfunction (non-functioning involuntary organs),
neuropsychiatric problems (brain/mental disorder), spasms
AIDS
dementia, headaches, speech problems
Diseases
Diabetes
No blood cells to feed nerves (damages nerves) resulting in less feeling
Athletes Foot
Extreme pain/itchiness
Cold
Severe aches, headache
