Nervous System
• Nervous System or neural system is a complex network of
nervous specilized to carry messaged
• Nervous system consists of two parts namely,
1. Central nervous system
2. Peripheral nervous system
1. Central Nervous System :
• The CNS receives and processes information from the senses.
• The CNS consists of 02 parts,
1. Brain
2. Spinal cord
1. Brain :
• The body is connected to the brain by the spinal cord through a network of nerves.
• One of the important, largest and Centra organ of the human nervous system
• It consists of three parts :
1. Forebrain
2. Midbrain
3. Hindbrain
1. Spinal Cord :
• The spinal cord extends from the foramen Magnum at the base of the skull to the
level of the first lumbar vertebra
• The serving as a conduction pathway for impulses going to and from the brain
• The spinal cord is divided into 31 segments with each segment giving rise to a pair of
spinal nerves
• Serving a reflex centre. The reflex arc is the functional unit of the nervous system
1. Peripheral Nervous System :
• PNS is the lateral Part of the nervous system that develops from the central nervous system which
connects different parts of the body with the CNS.
• PNS includes two types of nerve fibres,,
1. Afferent nerve fibre :
• These are responsible for transmitting messages from tissuses and organs of the CNS
1. Efferent nerve fibre :
• These are responsible for conveying messages from CNS to the corresponding peripheral organ
• Classification of PNS :
1. Somatic neural Syatem :
• It is neural system that controls the voluntary actions in the body by transmitting impulses
from CNS to skeletal muscle cells.
• It consists of the somatic nerves
• SNS carries motor and sensory signals to and from the CNS
• The somatic nervous that extends from the brain are anown as cranial nerves and are
located on the back of the head and neck
1. Atonomic neural System :
• The autonomic neural system is involved in involuntary actions like regulation of
physiological functions.
• It is a self-regulating system which conveys the impulses from the CNS to the smooth
muscles and involuntary organs
• ANS also uses most of the 31 spinal nerves and control the unconscious processess.
• ANS includes the two types :
• Sympathetic nervous system
• Parasympathetic nervous system
