CELL FIZZZZ OUTLINE OF MATERIALS FOR 3RD EXAM- Spring 2009

Pathways: Glycolysis (EMP), Ethanol Fermentation (ETOH), Lactate Fermentation (LACT), Kreb's Cycle
(TCA), Electron Transport System (ETS), Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP), Entner-Doudorof Pathway
(ED) Beta Oxidation of Fatty Acids (Even #,Odd #, Saturated and Unsaturated).

This includes calculations of ATP production, total and specific activity calculations, recognition of
pathways from information given, drawing the structures of intermediates with location of radioactive
carbons (no tracing of radioactive carbons through the Krebʼs Cycle), % of radioactivity in products; % of
products that are radioactive, and % efficiency of pathway calculations, and some multiple choice or true
false questions.

A. You may be asked to draw certain structures of all the intermediates in the following pathways:
1. Glycolysis (EMP)
2. Ethanol Fermentation (ETOH)
3. Lactate Fermentation (LACT)
4. Kreb's Cycle (TCA)
5. Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP)
6. Entner-Doudorof Pathway (ED)

Also be able to label each carbon atom with the location of the radioactive carbon

B. The following enzymes in the following pathways

1. Glycolysis (EMP): aldolase and phosphofructokinase
2. Kreb's Cycle (TCA): citrate synthetase
3. Pentose Phosphate Pathway(PPP): glucose-6-phosphate dehyrogenase
4. Gluconeogenesis(Glu): three enzymes bypassed in EMP and enzymes that replace them.

C. Fatty Acid Degradation (Beta-Oxidation)

Fill in the blank questions about pathways similar to the following:

Precursor Product Pathway

?* ------------> Glucose-6-Phosphate ?**

?*** ------------> Ethanol ?****

*Glucose, **EMP, ED, & PPP, ***Pyruvate, ****ETOH

PATHWAY RECOGNITION: Questions will give you the end products from the metabolism of a glucose,
etc. with specific carbons labeled with 14C, and you will write the name or names of the pathways in the
order they occur.

Example: If Glucose- 1-14C were metabolized to fructose-6-phosphate, and all the radioactivity
were found in the CO2 evolved. Then the pathway would be?

Answer=Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP), In the PPP the 1-14C of glucose comes off as CO2, and
the end products include fructose-6-phosphate. It can not be EMP because the fructose-6-phosphate
would have the 14C, and no CO2 is evolved via only the EMP. It is not EMP----->ETOH, because the
CO2 evolved
14 14
comes from 3- C and 4- C and the end products are ethanol, not fructose-6-phosphate.

It is not the ED, because the end products of ED are pyruvate and 3-PGAld.
