Germanys Eastern border
5) Austria-Hungary was split up. Austria is a German-speaking country which may want to unite with Germany.
6) German important trading port of Danzig which is claimed by Poland.
7) West Prussia and Posen. Most of the people are German but Poland needs these areas for access to the Baltic
Sea.
8) Sudetenland (part of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire). Its people are mostly German, but it has mountains
which would make Czechoslovakia easier to defend against German attack.

9) Alsace-Lorraine. Germany took this important industrial area from France in 1870. The population is mixed, but it
is more French than German.
10) The Saar, a German coalmining area.
11) German area of Eupen-Malmedy.
12) Rhineland, the people are German, but France wants it separated from Germany to make it more difficult for
Germany to attack France again.
13) Part of Schleswig, Danes lived in the north and Germans in the south.
