1. Sometimes the difference between the mass of an atom and the sum of the passes of its
protons, neutrons, and electrons are not the same. This is called mass defect.
2. The more unstable the atom the higher and less even the proton and neutron ratio is. They
have to cancel each other out, so if there is more of one than another, it becomes unstable.
3. 2 over 1alpha

1.
a. Mass defect relates to nuclear binding energy because mass defect occurs when
energy is used resulting in a loss of mass. Nuclear binding energy is the energy
that loses mass.
b. The heavier the atom, the more energy it’s going to use.
c. Unstable nucleus’s don’t have a lot of binding going on because its unstable.
2. The number of protons a neutrons in an atom should be about equal for a stable atom.
The more unequal they get, the more unstable. Each proton needs a neutron to cancel
itself out.
11.
a. electron
b. Helium
c. positron
d. Carbon

1. Radioactive decay is the spontaneous disintegration of a nucleus into a slightly lighter
nucleus, accompanied by the emission of particles, electromagnetic radiation, or both.
2.
a. The three types of radioactive decay is alpha emission, beta emission, and gamma
emission.
b. ?

4. When it can’t be divided anymore.
