THE SEA LINK AND MONSOON

On 30th June 2009 our city Mumbai got a new land mark i.e. the
Bandra Worli sea link. A first of its kind in India. Not only is an engineering
marvel, the new bridge is also very beautiful. It is a thrilling experience to
drive on the sea link as fresh sea breeze splashes you. The sea link
definitely saves ones time, energy and eases the traffic jam which has
become a part of Mumbai life. In addition to this, a sense of achievement
fills up your heart as you pass through the bridgeMan conquering the
Nature (reminds you of Rama-setu).
True, the sea link will be always the landmark of Mumbai but soon, it
will stop making news. However, it is the monsoon which will be always
making the news during the season. Some time it keeps us waiting, some
times it frightens us with its force but constantly reminds us that we are
controlled by laws of Nature.
From the time immemorial our ancestors always prayed Varuna Deva
(God of Sky) for good rains. The fear of famines and floods loomed largely
in the minds of the people. With all scientific development, even today,
the things have not changed. We may have airplanes, sky-scrapers and
bridges, but still, we are at the mercy of Nature. The technique called
cloud seeding has not made much headway as it has many
shortcomings. India being an agricultural country, our people mostly
live in anxiety during monsoon and often feel helpless.
Situation in metros are not different either. Though monsoon played
hide and seek for some time, Mumbaikars got respite when it finally
arrived. But the problems regarding water still continue. Right now, 30%
water cut has been announced by BMC as catchment areas have not
received enough rains. A Mumbaikar wants to move freely even during
monsoon but the roads are invariably flooded, railway lines are
submerged making it difficult to commute (situations have not improved
over the years). He wants that taps in his house should have running
water-but there is no water. What a paradox!
The need of the hour:- There have been endless discussions about
rain water harvesting. Rain water harvesting means gathering,
accumulating and storing rainwater. The concept is not new.
Traditionally, every individual house in desert areas like Rajasthan ensured
that every drop of water on their roofs was stored and utilized through
out the year. Rain water harvesting was in practice in different parts of
India and other countries. In India reservoirs called tankas, made up
with mud walls were used to store water. The age old practice diminished
as modern techniques evolved. Now, we have realized their
shortcomings too.
The earth has about 140 crores cubic kms of water but only 2.7% of
its fresh water can be utilized. It is said that about 1052 billion litres of rain
water received by Mumbai gets drained into sea every year. Even if a
fraction of it were harvested, the city would not have water-cuts at all.
Rain water harvesting in urban areas helps to mitigate flooding and also
can be utilized for multiple purposes. Now, it is the time to act.
WATER IS THE PRIME RESOURCE WE CAN LEAVE FOR THE FUTURE
GENERATIONS.

AUGUST 2009

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
I am addressing you soon after 45th annual general meeting held on 19th July, 2009. We had expected the members
to attend in large numbers but even after the meeting was adjourned by half hour, about 52 members attended the
meeting.
We are happy to inform you that on 10th July 2009 we finally signed the deal regarding the Land in Dombivli & Thane
with Mr. Lodha. We appreciate the efforts put in by Shri G. P. Bhat Kashi & Shri S. P. Bhagwat in finanalising the deal. Our
sincere thanks to Shri G. P. Bhat Kashi. It is just a beginning of our DREAM PROJECT. We are confident that we will be
able to clear all the necessary formalities so that we can start constructing. I request, one and all, to come forward and
support us so that one of the cherished dreams of HWT of having our own community Hall and an Old Age Home are
fulfilled. Please note that it is a gigantic task. It needs money, man power, specialized skill and above all TIME. This is an
opportunity to come together, forget the differences if any, and to complete the DREAM PROJECT. Remember that if this
project is successful HWT will emerge as a strong organization capable of organizing many useful programs independently.
HWT will be a source of help for needy Havyakas by granting Medical and Educational aid and by giving support for the
Old age. Please think over and get involved.
Managing the Dhyan Mandir & a Flat which is ready for possession is the immediate task ahead. We have to administer
it in such a way that our Trust will be able to generate income to fulfill its social obligations. We are optimistic.
Let us pray the ALMIGHTY to bless us so that we are successful in our mission.
Though there are many points discussed in the AGM one of the major thrust is upon membership drive. We would like
to increase the membership by at least 30% more. Let us work on it.
There is no further development regarding Panvel land. The status quo continues.
Friends, once again we request you to get involved in our dream Project HAVYAKARA BHAVANA
With warm regards.

N. R. HEGDE
President

Breast milk is the most natural and perfect food for
normal growth and healthy development of infants.
Breast feeding reduces risk of infection
Breast feeding helps in retraction of the uterus.
Incidence of breast cancer is lower in mothers who
breast feed their children.
Calcium is needed for growth and bone development
Calcium prevents osteoporosis (thinning of bone).
Milk, curds, ragi and nuts are rich sources of
bioavailable calcium.
Exercise reduces loss of calcium from bones.
Vitamin A is needed for normal vision. Vitamin a deficiency
leads to night-blindness and changes in eyes.
Childhood infections like diarrhea, measles and
respiratory infections and parasitic infections (worms)
reduce absorption of vitamin A through the gut.
