How to Make Flowcharts

Most-Used Flowchart Symbols

Terminator: Used at the beginning and end of a program or subroutine.
Process: Such as performing arithmetic.
Decision: Used for statements that cause the computer to choose between
two or more paths. The IF statement is an example of this.
Inputoutput operations!
Subroutine call: The computer temporarily runs the instructions in the
subroutine and then returns to the instruction immediately following the
subroutine call. Flowcharts for subroutines can be on different pages than
the flowchart for the main program.
"n-pa#e connector: Instead of drawing a line between two points, you can
have a line going to an onpage connector and then have a second onpage
connector at the place where a long line would have gone. The same letter
is placed inside each of these two circles to distinguish them from other
circles on the page.
"$$-pa#e connector: Same purpose as the onpage connector, except the
second point is on a different page. !gain, identical letters are placed inside
each of two connectors that go together.

If your main program re"uires more than one page, you probably should be
brea#ing it down into more subroutines. Flowcharts longer than one page are hard
to understand.
! word to the wise: good programmers use lots of subroutines, whereas bad ones
usually don$t.

How to make flowcharts in PowerPoint?
With Powerpoint you can create effective presentation materials but most users are not
familiar with the fundamentals of creating flowcharts. Flowcharts are good for showing step
by step process using different kinds of labeled boxes and arrows.
Below are the steps on how to make a flowchart:
Step 1: Create a new slide where you want to make your chart right click on the
slides tab and then choose !"ew #lide$ on the menu:
Step 2: %nable the grids to guide you on drawing ob&ects. Click 'iew menu then
click Grid and Guides:
Check the !(isplay grid on screen$ to enable the grids. Click )* to close the window:
Step 3: +se the AutoShapes menu to access the Flowchart ob&ects:

Choose any flowchart ob&ect to draw on the slide. For this tutorial , will start with a
!terminator$ block as a starting point:
Step 4: Put text inside the boxes to act as labels. -ight click on the ob&ect then
choose !.dd /ext$:
0ou can then type any text inside the ob&ect:
Step 5: (raw other ob&ects using the steps above. ,n this example1 , put two
steps and another terminator block:
Step : Connect the ob&ects using connectors:
-emember to always use connectors instead of lines! "onnectors are bounded with the
ob&ects so they are easier to manage than lines.

0ou can see from above that even with the boxes are moved1 the connectors are still intact.
/hese steps should get you started with making your own flowcharts. /here are many other
types of flowchart ob&ects available in the flowchart .uto#hapes so make sure to choose the
right type of box for each of your operations. 0ou can also edit the look of the items by right
clicking them and choosing the !Format .uto#hape$ menu:

With this window1 you can edit the colors1 line style1 weight of borders1 transparency and
other cosmetic parameters.
