HORIZON REPORT 2
When thinking about technology one does not always think about how this technology
can affect education. You also do not think about how to incorporate technology such as gaming
into your educational pedagogy. As administrators and potential faculty members technology is
now going to be essential in the learning and application of materials that we are passing along to
our students. It is going to be essential to see where we have been, where we are, and project
where we are going. The Horizon reports do that exact kind of research in regards to technology
and how it is effecting and will affect higher education.
It was apparent that one key development that was assessed in most of the reports was
security. Security is more prevalent in the first few reports and we can see in the current and
future reports are the importance of incorporating social media, gaming, and students as creators
on campus. The Horizon reports really help to point out the flaws in IT departments as well as
the successes while also assessing the campus and its needs by using collaborators from a variety
of institutions. It is also very clear in the Horizon Reports the need for assessment, transparency,
and giving those reading the reports the tools to create IT change on their campus.
In the next five years it will be imperative that we research the following two
technological advances. The first technological advancement that should be researched is that of
the Networked Society. According to the one page publication by Ericsson (2014), The
Networked Society is about new ways for us to collaborate, share and get informed. Its about
innovative ways of doing business and shaping the future together. (Pg.1) Although we are on
the brink of using technology in connecting billons of individuals in all part of the world; It is
essential that we research how that technology is being used in education and how we are
advancing scholarship and educational collaboration. The second innovation that must be
researched is that of object embedded intelligence and digitizing classrooms and the integration

of this technology into classrooms in higher education institutions. According to Michell Zappa
(2012), Models of teaching worldwide are being revolutionized and reconsidered in real-time,
and it seems everybody is looking for the holy grail of how to future-proof their classrooms.
Advancing technology is leaving old schools of thought in their wake, and teachers are waking
up to the fact that things will only speed up further in the foreseeable future. (Education section,
para 1)
The Horizon reports and the advisory committees that compile the reports will allow for
advanced scholarship and research on the use of these two technologies and how higher
education institutions are using them to advance their missions. According to The New Horizon
Report (Johnson, 2014) While there are many local factors affecting the practice of education,
there are also issues that transcend regional boundaries and questions common to higher
education. (Pg.13) As administrators we must keep this in mind when we are looking towards
the future and incorporating these technologies on our campuses. The mobility report by
Ericsson (2014) said it best, Students and progressive teachers, empowered by technology are
the catalysts for fundamental change. (Pg. 4)
