08.602: Dynamics of Machinery (S6 - Mechanical)
Time: 2 Hrs Max Marks:50
Part A
Answer all Questions (5 x 4 =20 Marks)
1) State the conditions for a three force and four force member to be in static equilibrium.
2) State and Explain Principle of virtual work.
3) Write a note on different types of damping. Show that viscous damping force is proportional
to velocity.
4) Find the natural frequency of the system (a) as shown in the figure (b) If an extra support
with stiffness 3kN/m is attached at the beam center.

5) Devise a model for (a) a motor cycle and rider (b) Washing Machine, with basic elements of
vibration.
Part B
Answer any three questions (10 x 3 =30 Marks)

6) For the mechanism shown in figure, find the required input torque on AB for static
equilibrium of the mechanism.

(P.T.O)

7) For the mechanism shown in the figure given below, find the required input torque for the
static equilibrium. The lengths OA and AB are 250 mm and 650 mm respectively. F= 500N

8. (a) Derive the equation of motion for the system shown in Fig

(b) Find the natural frequency of the system for the the values, I = 2.4 Kg-m2, m = 20 kg ,
R1=20cm, R2 = 40cm, k = 2 kN/m (2)
9. (a) Derive the equation of motion for a single degree of freedom spring mass system (free
undamped vibration) and obtain the general solution for the given initial conditions (displcement
and velocity) (7)
(b) When an engine of mass 500 Kg is mounted on an elastic foundation it deflects for 5mm. If the
system is displaced downward from its equilibrium position through a distance of 0.2 mm and
released upward with an initial velocity of 10 mm/s Find the (1) The period of oscillation
(2) Maximum acceleration (3) phase angle (3)
