Answer Question No.1 (Part-1) which is compulsory, any eight from Part-II and any two from
Part-III.
The figures in the right hand margin indicate marks.

Part- I
Q1 Only Short Answer Type Questions (Answer All-10) (2 x 10)
a) Briefly explain different types of damping.
b) What is degrees of freedom of a vibrating system and specify the number for a continuous
elastic system?
c) What is the principle on which vibrometer is based?
d) What do you mean by generalized co-ordinates?
e) Name the seismic instruments.
f) Define flexibility influence co-efficients.
g) What is vibration isolation?
h) What do you mean by transmissibility?
i) Explain Lagrange’s equation.
j) Write the final expression for natural frequency of a cantilever beam, giving details of the
notations used.

Part- II
Q2 Only Focused-Short Answer Type Questions- (Answer Any Eight out of Twelve) (6 x 8)
a) Define fundamental mode of vibration, natural frequency, resonance and damping effect of
a mechanical vibration system.
b) A centrifugal compressor of mass 100 kg is supported on isolators having a damping factor
of 0.2. It runs at a constant speed of 1500 rpm and has a rotating unbalance of 0.1 kg-m.
What should be the stiffness of the isolator if the force transmitted to the foundations is to
be less than 10% of the unbalanced force?
c) Explain the orthogonality principle.
d) For an under damped system, plot a graph of phase angle versus damping factor, in case
of damped free vibration.
e) A 75 kg machine is mounted on springs of stiffness k=11.76 105 N/m with an assumed
damping factor of   0.20 . A 2 kg piston within the machine has a reciprocating motion
with a stroke of 0.08 m and a speed of 3000 cycle/min. assuming the motion of the piston
to be harmonic, determine the amplitude of vibration of the machine and the vibratory force
transmitted to the foundation.
f) A vibrometer has a period of free vibration of 2 seconds. It is attached to a machine with a
vertical harmonic frequency of 1 Hz. If the vibrometer mass has an amplitude of 2.5 mm
relative to the vibrometer frame, what is the amplitude of vibration of machine?
g) Determine the normal functions for free longitudinal vibration of a bar of length l and
uniform cross-section. One end of the bar is fixed and the other free.
h) Derive the frequency equation of longitudinal vibrations for a free-free beam with zero initial
displacement.
