Step 1: Define the Problem
Too many water bottles are in landfills

People want to have a small garden but have no place to put one.
Step 2: Brainstorm, Research, and Generate
Ideas
Main innovation: Self managed flower pots

Side innovation: Windmill Alternator

Rejected ideas: Green house, shovel head, bird feeder, irrigation system,
windmill alternator and trough.

Step 3: Identify Criteria and Specify Constraints
Constraints
Item: Water bottle
Use: Agriculture
Criteria: Must solve an actual problem facing the agricultural field.
Step 4: Develop and Propose Designs and
Choose Among Alternative Solutions

Main innovation went from a form of transporting small plants, to a way to
grow a single plant, and finally four self managed flower pots.

Step 5: Implement the Proposed Solution

We decided on the self managed flower pot because of its: cost efficiency,
simplicity, and effectiveness.
Step 6: Make a Model or Prototype
This was the beginning of our self managed
flower pot.
Step 7: Evaluate the Solution and Its
Consequences
Solution: This innovation would help give water bottles multiple lives and
help cut back on the amount of traditional materials used for growing small
plants.

Consequences: The chemicals in the water bottles may scare away potential
buyers.
Step 8: Refine the Design
Instead of poking holes in the cap and making the base for the soil rocks so
water could be pulled through the cap and fed to the plant we decided to use
a screen material to hold the soil.
Also added a DQ drink carrier so more plants could be grown at one time.
Step 9: Create the Final Design
Step 10: Communicate the Processes and
Results
Processes: We cut four water bottles in half, but the bottom through a hole
in the drink carrier, turn the top part of the water bottle upside down and set
it on top of the bottom half, then a screen was added to each bottle.

Result: We ended up with a self managed flower pot.
