Answering the question
1

Read the email below and the sentences AH from different student answers. Which points do they
answer? Put them in the correct column in the table.
2

Now write a letter using four of the sentences
on the left or your own if you prefer. Here is a
beginning and ending to use.
A Our school is quite small and we wanted to make sure
we had a big audience. The performers brought all their
friends with them so that was good.
B You need to have music people can dance to and some
music that the students parents will recognise too, so a
mixture is best.
C Its dif cult to know how much food to have or what
people will eat so its not a good idea to provide it.
D If the weather is bad, people wont come if its in the
park or on the school feld so its better to be inside. It
rained all day when we had our festival.
E The most successful performances were the bands
which had young people in them. You could have a bit of
classical music too though as some people enjoy that.
F You will probably need to sell drinks but its very hard
work to make food for everyone. You would need lots of
people to help so I dont think its a good idea to provide
it.
G In summer, its nice to be in the fresh air and also you
will have more space for dancing so we preferred to be
outside.
H We decided we wanted a wide variety of music so we
invited people of diferent ages to perform. You could
ask the relatives of the students at your school.

Dear Beth
I am glad to give you some advice about your music
festival.

I hope your festival is successful and that you will tell me
all about it.
Best wishes
Some friends and I are organising a music festival at our school. I know
your school did this last year so I want to ask you some questions.
Did it take place indoors or outdoors?
I remember you invited local people to perform as well as people from
your school. Was that a good idea?
We are thinking of serving food. What do you think? Did you have any? We are
wondering what kind of music is best. What was most popular at your festival?
Reply soon.

Hi Emily, Thank you for your leter. The dates youre planning
on coming here would be great, because La Paloma festival
is held on the 15th. I am sure all your group will love it. Groups
of people dress up in traditional costumes, and dance to
famous songs, and later, there is a big street party with live
bands playing until four in the morning. I think the Plaza Hotel
would be a very good choice as a place to stay, although it is
not cheap. Nevertheless, it is so central that youll be able
to walk to most of the museums, galleries and restaurants.
With reference to the teenagers in your group, I would
suggest going to Fuencarral market as there are lots of cool
shops there and a cinema, too. Moreover, during the summer
sales, which start in August, you can nd some real bargains.
I would also like to give you my thanks for the oer of a
present. When I was in London, I used to love drinking English
tea, so some tea bags would be lovely. I am looking forward to
hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Susana
4 Emily is organising a trip for a group of British
people in Susanas town and she has written to
Susana to ask her for advice. Read Susanas reply,
then rewrite it in your notebook, correcting the
mistakes by referring to the advice in Exercise 3
and the Writing tip.
