2nd Grade writ t en procedure
1-State the procedure. Today we will learn how to line up and find our spot outside for a fire drill and practice the
procedures involved in a fire drill or evacuation.
2.- Generate the rationale: (why is this important). This is important because fire is dangerous. We need to practice
this drill bi-monthly just in case anything happened that required us to vacate premises. Practice makes perfect and
with practice, students tend to do a lot better if/when a real accident occurs.
3 Explain and model the practice. Let the students know we have 3 minutes to get in line and out of the building
when the first drill goes off. When I say line up, you are going to get in an orderly manner. (Demonstrate with 3-4
people in the class but get volunteers). Have students lean against wall and do quick attendance to ensure no one was
in the bathroom before drill went off. Once we are all in order, we will have 2 people (first one in line and last one in
line) act as door openers and to ensure that the door is closed when we exit the building. When outside, we will take
attendance to ensure no one was left inside the building. If someone is missing, we will give his or her name to the
administrator.
4- Check for understanding: What are some things we need to do when we hear the fire drill sound off. Ask how we
line up in case of an evacuation. Ask why we need to be quiet and listen for directions during an evacuation.
5- Practice the procedure:
Step 1: have students stand up and go to the front of the classroom and line up in boy/girl order. Check down the
line and do a quick attendance
Step 2: have kids stand in line with one hand over their mouth and the other hand across their chest.
Step 3: tell the 2 students (one in the front and the one in the back of the line) to come to the front. Have one
student go to the EXIT and have the other student close the door once everyone is out of the class.
Step 4: have students go outside and remain quiet. Do attendance and if anyone is missing tell the administrator.
Step 5: have students come back into classroom and provide front office with attendance from drill.
Step 6: ask students Q and As after fire drill. Recap the importance of fire drills and being quiet during the fire
drill.
6- Give specific feedback. When the students come back into the classroom, praise them for the great work they did
and encourage them to keep up the good work. Emphasize the importance of fire drills.
7- Reteach, practice and reinforce. I will have the students line up according to step number 3 and practice the
procedure weekly for the schools bi-monthly fire drill schedule.
