Teacher Comments:

1984 Project Choices:

1. Rewrite the setting of 1984 OR restage the 2 Minutes Hate in modern times, using current
people, events, and issues. Follow the rewrite with a brief analysis (100 words) of the effect of
the change in setting.

2. Draw a comic strip about Winston writing in his diary and beginning his journey to revolt against
Big Brother, synthesizing the comic to 10-15 panels. Accompany the comic strip with a guide
that gives discussion questions for each panel.

3. Create a PowerPoint presentation on the significance of Orwells invented terminology in the

novel. Discuss at least three different terms that Orwell creates specifically for the novel, with
three to five examples for each term (nine to fifteen examples total). Make sure that the
PowerPoint includes visuals, color, and animations. Finally, explain the significance of creating
new terminology and technology to describe the futuristic, dystopian world of Oceania.

4. Each partner will create an internal monologue for one of the characters in a single scene as
s/he struggles with a decision. The monologue should refer to the other character and use
specific events, characters, and tensions from the novel. Suggestion: Julia and Winston discuss
the dangers of their relationship, Winston, the Red Prole Woman, and/ or OBrien discuss the
benefits and struggles of being an Inner Party member, an Outer Party member or a prole.

5. Use a painting, dance, or essay to express something that you learned about yourself from this
novel. Be certain that you make direct reference to the novel. Prepare a press conference about
your work where you make an opening statement and class members ask you questions.

6. Compose or select a musical accompaniment for one scene in 1984. Make a tape or write a
group essay explaining how the music in the background reflects the changing emotions of the
scene.

7. Compare 1984 to another historical period, a current location/ event, or another literary work.
Compare the similarities and differences between these era and/or worlds in a well-organized
essay or PowerPoint presentation.
8. Design a project of your own and submit the proposal to me for approval.
