-Say: Ray said (that) he was tired. (We do not mention an indirect object).
Ray said to me (that) he was tired. (If we want to mention an indirect object, we must
use the preposition to).
-Tell: Sandra told me (that) she had worked hard. (We also use tell to report
statements. With tell we must mention an indirect object.)
