Introduction

Cement is an binding material which is used

in Construction Industry. Cement sets well
under water and hardens quickly and
attains strength. Cement differ from lime
by property that it does not slake but sets
readily.
Cement is an Calcarious
substans which is used in
Mortar or Concrete for
construction.
USES OF CEMENT

It is
used in cement mortar for masonry
work,plaster etc.

It is used in concrete for laying

floors,roofs,lintels beams etc.

It is used for precast

pipes,piles,fencing posts etc.

INGREDIENTS OF CEMENT

OXIDE N
PERCENT
Lime CaO 60-67
Silica SiO2 17-25
Alumina Al2O3 3.0-8.0
Iron Oxide Fe2O3 0.5-6.0
Magnesia MgO 0.1-4.0
Sulphur tri oxide SO3 1.0-3.0
Soda and potas Na2O.K2O 0.4-1.3
HARMFUL INGREDIENTS IN CEMENT

◗ Excess of alumina reduces the strengh.

◗ Magnesia content should not exceed 8%.
This will affect the soundness of cement.
◗ Excess of lime produces objectionable
expansion loading to disintegration.
◗ Excess of alkalies produces alkali
aggregates reaction, efflorescence.

TESTS FOR CEMENT

Because of the fact that Cement is used in

construction of various major works,it is

necessary to test the cement to confirm the
Field test
requirements of Indian standards.
Laboratory test
FIELD TESTS FOR CEMENT
◗ Cement should be of uniform colour.
◗ Portland cement should be greenish gray.
◗ When a small sample of cement is rubbed
between figures. It should feel smooth.
◗ The cement mass must feel cool when
touched by hand.
◗ There should be no lumps in the
cement.lumps indicate cement that has
already set.
LABORATORY TESTS FOR CEMENT
◗ Fineness test
◗ Setting time test
◗ Strength test
◗ Soundness test
