INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN
Joshua P. Barnhart

PROGRAM GOAL: To provide students with a foundation of skills and strategies while
performing a variety of activities which promote lifelong physical fitness through enhancing
students ability to participate in recreational sport.

UNIT GOAL: For students to demonstrate the skills and strategies necessary to fully
participate in a recreational floor hockey game.

GRADE-RELATED LEARNING EXPECTATION:


Sixth Grade
Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain possession and create space to attack the
goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to use spacing to defend the goal when
on defense during 3v3 modified games. (M.IG.06.01)
Seventh Grade
Students will demonstrate strategies to maintain possession and create space to attack the
goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to describe strategies to use spacing to
defend the goal when on defense during 4v4 modified games. (M.IG.07.01)
Eighth Grade
Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain possession and create space to attack the
goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to use spacing to defend the goal when
on defense during 4v4 modified games. (M.IG.08.01)
High School
Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain possession and create space to attack the
goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to use spacing to defend the goal when
on defense during regulation games.

LESSON SEQUENCE 7th Grade:


Lesson One: Students will demonstrate adequate teamwork skills when given different tasks to
complete as a team.
Lesson Two: Students will demonstrate strategies to maintain ball control while creating space
in a passing scenario in which a three-person weave which mimics an offensive attack.
Lesson Three: Students will demonstrate skill in creating open space while attacking the goal in
groups of three against a two person defense.
Lesson Four: Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain possession and create space
when attacking the goal in group of four in a controlled practice environment against a three
person defense.
Lesson Five: Students will demonstrate strategies to maintain possession and create space to
attack the goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to describe strategies to use spacing
to defend the goal when on defense during 4v4 modified games.

INSTRUCTION
Lesson 2: Ball Control and teamwork
Materials Needed:
Hockey Sticks
Balls or Pucks
Floor Tape
Cones
Record Keeping Sheet
Instructional Objectives:
1. Students will demonstrate strategies to maintain possession and create space to attack the
goal both on and off the ball as well as the ability to describe strategies to use spacing to
defend the goal when on defense during 4v4 modified games.
2. Students will display positive teamwork in order to work together and achieve the lesson
objectives in small groups.
3. Students will demonstrate strategies to maintain ball control while creating space in a
passing scenario during 4 on 3 modified games.
Cues/Key Words:
Spread the floor
Time Frame: Approx. 45 min.
Warm-up Activity: (5 minutes)
Three-Man-Weave: Students are in three lines on the baseline and begin a three man
weave across the court, around the cones at the far end, and back down the court on the
side parallel to where they started (Similar to following a oval or track). Each group of
three completes this task while keeping track of the amount of times that they lost control
of the ball/puck. The amount of times out of control is recorded on that groups record
sheet.
Anticipatory Set:
(5 minutes)
Review the importance of teamwork and working with others in order to accomplish a
goal that could otherwise not be achieved. Explain the unit and day goals and ensure that
they are visibly seen by the students.

1. Practice Activity:
(10 minutes)
Purpose of Activity: To teach students to control a ball or puck with a hockey stick using
various speeds and direction.
Description: Students begin moving a ball or puck around a box made of floor tape (or
cones if outside). The box is the "jail". On the signal, students begin to move the ball or
puck around the designated area using various speeds and direction. On the signal,
students are given 10 seconds (or your choice of time) to return their ball or puck to a box
(1 person per box) and must choose a different box each time to avoid hanging around the
same box. If all of the students make it back to their box before the 10 seconds the class
gets a point. If everyone does not make it or if someone uses their hands to put the ball or
puck in a box, the teacher gets a point. Set a score total to play to or a time limit that is
visual for the students.
Variation (If needed): Add 2 or 3 players as defenders to slow down the class. The
defenders could remain stationary. If defenders sticks come off the ground the teachers
will be awarded a point.
2. Practice Activity: MSU Drill (10 minutes)
Purpose of Activity: To control the ball and change speed and directions while adding
competition against the clock and self.

Description: (Diagram) Students will pass from one spot to another down the floor and at
the end of each side they will shoot the ball in the net. On the first side students will get
the ball out of the net and move on to the next side doing the same thing going the
opposite way. Each time the ball goes in the net there is a point awarded. The goal will be
set by the trial run of the students.
Variation (If needed): Change the time from 2 minutes to 1:30 and try and achieve the
same goal

3. Application: (10 minutes)


Three-Man-Weave: (Similar to warm-up activity.) Students are in three lines on the
baseline and begin a three man weave across the court, around the cones at the far end,
and back down the court on the side parallel to where they started (Similar to following a
oval or track). Each group of three completes this task while keeping track of the amount
of times that they lost control of the ball/puck. The amount of times out of control is
recorded on the record sheet next to the score recorded during the warm-up activity.
4. Closure:
(2 minutes)
Provide feedback and give students an idea of what will take place in next classes lesson.
