The Hyperbola

HYPERBOLAS

Standard Equation (vertical)

Standard Equation (horizontal)

Asymptotes:
Always count slopes from center to get 4 corners of rectangle.

Foci:

Center:
Transverse
Axis:

ALWAYS THINK VISUALLY!

Steps to graphing from equation:
** Must be in standard form **

1. Determine which way the hyperbola is facing.

2. Build from center.
3. What is my vertical radius and horizontal radius? ( denominator )
POSITIVE variable: determines vertices; NEGATIVE variable: determines other side of asymptote rectangle
4. Draw asymptotes & hyperbolas
5. Calculate c. ( c2 a2 b2 )
6. Use c to graph both foci on the transverse axis (inside parabola- count from center).
Example:
1. Graph

x2 y 2

1 and plot foci and asymptotes.
