Accetate

Acetate originated in Europe. Acetate is also called regular or


secondary acetate.

Acetate fibers are dry spun. The solution is forced through the
spinneret into an air section chamber where the fibers are
formed as the solvent evaporates in a heated environment.
Production
Wood pulp and cotton linters are mixed with glacial acetic,
acetic anhydride and a catalyst. The above is allowed to
precipitate as flakes. The flakes are dissolved in acetone and
the solution is ready for extrusion through the spinneret.

Triaccetate Production
Triacetate is manufactured from the same raw material as
secondary acetate but the spinning solution is made by
dissolving the dried flakes in methylene chloride instead of
acetone (as in case of acetate). It is marketed under the name
Arnel.
