    Water is absorbed into the roots of plants through osmosis. The concentration of water is higher outside the root cells than inside, so water diffuses into the root cells through their cell membranes. The water then travels through the xylem vessels of the root and stem by transpirational pull and is pulled up into the leaves where it is lost to the air through the stomata in a process called transpiration.
