Optical Fiber

By Tanim Pavel, and Jabari Hill (1st Period)

What is Optical Fiber?

Optical Fiber is
flexible high purity
glass capable of
carrying information
long distances with
low attenium or
signal loss.

Who created Optical Fiber?

Dr. Robert Maurer, Dr. Peter Schultz, and
Dr. Donald Keck invented the first optical
fiber cable in 1970 they created it because of
consumer demand of bandwidth during the
1960s this was an innovation.

Where or How is it Used?

Optical fiber is used in
the telecommunications
industry to provide more
bandwidth.

How was it first used?

Optical fiber is used mainly for
communication purposes. In the 1790s, the
optical telegraph was born.

Why does it affect us?

Because of optical fiber
you have instant access to
information and video
through devices like
computers, smart phones,
and tvs.You can send
email play online games
and download music.

What makes optical fiber optical

fiber?
Optical fiber has three basic
components the core with high
purity glass that carries
information through light
waves, the cladding glass
around the core that prevents
light from escaping and an
outer coating to prevent
damage.

Patent of Optical Fiber

A patent includes high density fiber optic
cable (US 6901191 B2) to handle even more
bandwidth than it could before.

Engineering Disciplines
Telecommunications Engineering was used
to make optical fiber this type of engineering
branches right of electrical engineering.

History of Optical Fiber

1790s- Optical Communications first invented.

1880- Alexander Graham Bell invented the photophone an experimental product that didn
t prove useful.

1940s- This technology has found use in the medical field by doctors.

1960s- Demand for consumer bandwidth was too high for normal methods at the time.

1970- Optical Fiber was first invented by Dr. Robert Maurer, Dr. Peter Schultz, and Dr.
Donald Keck.

How can it be improved?

A driving factor for optical fiber is market
demand so it always must be improved
however engineers are finding new ways to
do more things with optical fiber.
