This Week in 6th Grade Math

This week, students will learn how to write and evaluate expressions using exponents. They will also learn the order of operations.
Example:

3x = x + x + x
!

= x x x

We use multiplication as a quicker way to do repeated addition if the addends are the same.
We use exponents as a quicker way to multiply if the factors are the same.

The repeated factor is called the base and the exponent is also called the power.
In the example, x is the base and 3 is the exponent. You can read ! as x to the third power or x cubed.
Order of Operations: When we evaluate expressions, we use one set of rules so that everyone arrives at the same correct answer.
PEMDAS (1) Parentheses, (2) Exponents, (3) Multiplication & Division, (4) Addition & Subtraction
