March 2015 Monthly Overview For Parents

Teacher: Mr. Jones

Grade: 6

Dear Parents,
For the month of March, 2015 our grade 6 class will be studying the
following things in English Language Arts, English Social Studies,
English Science and English Math.
English
Language Arts

- Essay Writing Students will continue


learning about essay writing. They will have the
opportunity to write essays on such topics as
other planets/worlds and reflection essays.
-Journal Writing: Students will continue to
write weekly journals about a variety of topics.
Many of these journals will include words and
topics from their spelling books. We will also be
doing daily writing in our Daily 5.
-Reading Log (30 Minutes Daily) and
weekly reading summaries.
-Novel Study: We will continue to read and
study the novel The Westing Game through
worksheets, character descriptions classroom
discussions and Literature Circles.
-Spelling: In March we will be focusing on word
endings in spelling class. These will include e,
-y, and ing etc..
Resources: Nelson Spelling 6, The Westing
Game, English Dictionary, Handouts.

English Social
Studies

Cities: Using the topic of Mexico City, students will


study urban migration, settlement patterns, and the
effects of urbanization and technology on lifestyles
and environments.
Projects: summarizing, drawing diagrams showing

infrastructure, using maps and satellite images to


obtain information, identifying problems facing
Mexico city and suggesting solutions, stating their
views for the "city of the future"

English Science

Electricity: The students will continue to learn


about electricity this month. We will be focusing
on how we can use electricity to create
different forms of energy (sound, heat, motion
and light).
-We will also be discussing producing electricity
from renewable and non-renewable resources.
We will look in detail at how both Canada and
Korea create most of the electricity that they
need. (Is it the same?)
-We will also look and how electricity can be
changed into other forms of energy including
sound, heat, light and motion.
-Important Vocabulary: renewable,
hydroelectric, electromagnet, electrocuted,
consumption, conservation, dams, hydro, fossil
fuels, coal.

English
Mathematics

Resources: B.C. Science Probe 6, Video Clips,


Handouts.
-Fractions, Ratios and Percent
-Geometry and Measurement
-Describing and comparing triangles,
developing formulas for the perimeters of
polygons, area of triangles and volume of
prisms.
Important Vocabulary improper fractions,
mixed numbers, irregular polygon, polygon,
quadrilateral, concave, Venn diagram,
isosceles, equilateral, scalene, obtuse, acute.
