Find out what the hoot is about for

the month of September!

MATH:
We will be going over the Math
SOL below:
2.1 The student will
a) read, write, and identify the
place value of each digit in a
three-digit numeral, using
numeration models;
b) round two-digit numbers to
the nearest ten; and
c) compare two whole numbers
between 0 and 999, using
symbols (>, <, or =) and words
(greater than, less than, or
equal to).
At the end of the month the
student should be able to:
Understand the
relationship between the
ones, tens, and hundreds.
We will be using a
manipulative called Base10 blocks to further help
the student visualize
these number
relationships.

Determine the place value

in each three-digit
numeral using a picture
or physical representation
such as Base-10 blocks.
Know how to round twodigit numbers to the
nearest ten. We will be
working on color-coding
the place values to help
with this! Ones place will
be green and tens place
will be blue.
Compare two numbers
between 0 and 999 using
the words greater than,
less than, or equal to.
Students will practice this
with a partner using a
little whiteboards.
SCIENCE:
We will be going over the
Science SOL below:
The student will investigate and
understand that natural and
artificial magnets have certain

characteristics and attract

specific types of metals. Key
concepts include
a) magnetism, iron,
magnetic/nonmagnetic,
poles, attract/repel; and
b) important applications
of magnetism.
At the end of the month the
student should be able to:
Identify the north and
south magnetic poles.
Predict which materials
will be attracted to
magnets and then test
that prediction. They will
then create a chart that
classifies materials as
attracted to metals or not.
Identify how different
poles of magnets react to
poles of other magnets.
Students will learn that
magnets have important
applications in everyday
life.

Field Trips for September:

Chesterfield Fire and EMSWe will take a look into the Fire
and Life Safety House where
the students will learn about
fire safety! The children will be
taught home safety tips such as
crawl low and smoke.
Lewis Ginter Botanical
Gardens- We will take a tour
through the amazing
greenhouse and then the class
will be given a scavenger hunt
to explore the many different
types of plants that this
greenhouse has to offer.

Classroom G L O W S:
Maiya and Ryan have shown
EXCELLENT discussion skills
in the classroom discussions
that we have been holding
during our social studies block.
They both made eye contact
with their peers when speaking
and asked more questions to
others responses that really got
them thinking. Keep it up!
