EDUC 4113 School Climate Survey

AEIS 2013 -2014

1. Go to the Accountability Division of the TEA website.
c.

2.

You will be presented with a great deal of information about the district
you chose. Select statements containing pertinent information to share
about the district. Realize these are the final TAKS scores. As last year
was a benchmark year for STAAR, these are the accountability ratings
until next year.
This school has exceeded the districts passing scores for the STAAR in
the last two years except for Reading and Writing.
Woodrow Wilsons students scored in the 90 percentile for passing
students on the TAKS test in 2012 and 2013 except for mathematics in
2013.
The student body is 67.3% Hispanic and 57% economically
disadvantaged.
The average years of teacher experience is 10 years.
The campus has 116 staff members and only 8 of them are beginning
teachers.

Identify the school district and school name.

The school district is DallasISD and the schools name is Woodrow Wilson High
School.

3. Describe the school building (age, condition of building, general appearance).

The building was built in 1928 in an Elizabethan Style of architecture. It has been
kept well and decorated with lots of school pride and student works.
4. How many children are enrolled? How many was the building designed to hold?
Are there portable buildings? If so, how many?
There are 1,632 students enrolled at this school and has 18 portable buildings. I
am not sure how many students the school was built to hold, but it seems to be a
perfect fit for the amount of students they have now.
5. What is the range of grade levels? How many classes/students per grade level, on
average?
The school ranges from grades nine-twelve. Each student has to take a minimum
of seven classes a day and students that are in special programs or extracurricular
activities have a 0 period and/or an 8th period. There are 513 ninth graders, 475
tenth graders, 343 eleventh graders, and 301 twelfth graders.
6. Describe the classroom demographics. (# of children, diversity, subject/grade

level assignment)
In the dance classroom there is an average of 45-50 students per class period. The
classes are not very diverse. There is about, on average, 80% Hispanic students
and the other 20% is Black, White, and other ethnicities. Each class has a mix of
grades 9-12 grade students. As far as the school as a whole it is 67% Hispanic,
20% White, and 10% Black and half of the school is economically disadvantaged
and At-Risk.
7. Describe the classroom layout.
In this dance classroom the tools (ballet bars, projectors, etc) and materials that
could be used within a lesson are pushed against the walls providing maximum
space for the students to dance. Also, there are no desks or chairs in the
classroom.
8. What special programs (during school hours and after hours) are available at your
field site? (Minimum of 5 programs)
This school has 24 clubs/organizations not including all the sports and Fine Arts
troupes. A few of my favorites are the Robocats robotics team who builds robots!
The Junior World Affairs Council who gain the insight, understanding and
information to keep up with international affairs. I like The Woodrow Dance
Theater, Bowling team, and lastly the Interact Club who encourages and teaches
their members to be active leaders who make a positive change in their
communities.
9. Describe the feeling of the school (open and friendly, business-like). How does
it feel to be an adult visiting the school? How might it feel to be a new student in
this school?
When I walked into the school it seemed like a very close and tight knit
community, as a matter of fact, my first day at the school the woman working the
metal detector thought that she knew me and greeted warmly. All of the teachers
in the halls greet you with a good morning or hello. The hallways are filled with
cliques of friends during passing periods; I was also greeted warmly by the
students. If I were a new student there, it would probably be an easy transition for
me because of the warm teachers. As far as students are concerned I might leave
at the end of the day with one or two new friends, but the groups of friends there
are pretty close and I am not sure how easy it would be to join as a new student.
10. If you were a parent, would you want your child to be enrolled in this school?
Why or why not?
If I were a parent I would definitely enroll my child into this school, they are one
of the top schools in the DallasISD district and they have again 24 clubs and
organizations not including athletics and the fine arts, which means my child will
have plenty to get involved in. Woodrow Wilson also has a thriving IB Program.
