OBJ: Describe the three stages in the life cycle of a river or stream.

V. Old Rivers - water moves very slowly.


- has a flat slope.
- floods easily.
- flows too slow to get rid of extra water.
- meanders do not extend to valley walls.
- may eventually form an oxbow lake.
OXBOW LAKE = curved lake formed when a bend in a river is cut off
at both ends.
Example - Mississippi River

VI. Endangered Rivers - pollution from that results from developing new
energy sources endanger rivers.
- building dams
- draining acid from coal minds
- drilling for oil and natural gas
