EARTH SCIENCE 9-5 What are lakes and ponds?

OBJ: Describe how lakes and ponds form and how they change.

I. Still Waters
LAKES = low spot in Earth’s surface filled with still water.
PONDS = body of water similar to a lake but usually shallower
& smaller.
- 90% + of surface water is found in lakes.
- lakes have shorelines that erode.
- most of the water in lakes & ponds came from rain,
snow, or melting ice.

II. Formation of Lakes

KETTLE LAKES = lake formed by a retreating glacier.
- low spots on Earth’s surface are created in many
ways:
- erosion
- earthquakes
- meteorites

III. RESERVOIRS = artificial lake

- not all lakes are made by nature.
- dams across rivers
- water passed through a dam to create
electricity

IV. Growing Old - lakes & ponds change over time

How It Changes - ponds start as clear pools of water.
- sand, silt, and dead leaves and branches fill the pond.
Marsh - pond becomes shallow and more plants begin to
grow.
- pond becomes completely filled in.
- meadow/forest will grow.
- only a slight dip will be left of the pond.
