Homework Set 5: 1D Momentum & Energy

For all problems, begin with large pictorial representations and then write down the mathematical
representation from the picture. Do not begin by writing down an equation. It is essential for your
problem-solving process that you understand completely how & why the equations can be derived from
the picture(s) you draw.

A ball is held above the ground, and then is dropped so it falls straight down.
(Restrict your analysis to the ball moving in the air, BEFORE it hits the ground.)

A wind-up toy is wound up, then "walks" across a table and comes to a stop.

An object rests on a coiled spring, and is then launched upwards.

A truck is driven at constant speed down the street.

Momentum Charts
A 20 kg block of ice slides along an icy surface then collides and sticks to a 40 kg chunk of ice
that was initially stationary. The 20 kg block was initially moving at 6 m/s.
A 1200 kg car travels west at 20 m/s and collides head-on with an 800 kg Prius moving
eastward at 5 m/s. The cars collide and stick together.
A 10 kg model rocket car moves at 4 m/s as the second rocket stage begins to fire. The rocket
fires for 3 s and exerts 10 N of thrust on the car.
The two asteroids remain joined together after the collision.
