South Central Troy Neighborhood Watch Update

Our last meeting was held on October 19th at the USTA Headquarters. Officer Wade gave an update on our area. During
the month of September, there were 23 arrests. A map with
all of the details was given to meeting attendees and questions
and concerns followed. Thanks to residents that helped this
past month with missing dog situations.

We had a representative from Hart Alarm Systems speak to

our group about safe guarding properties to protect from potential break-ins and burglaries. He stressed the following tips
to safeguard properties:
1. Motion detecting lights in the rear of properties are helpful in scaring off potential criminals
2. Use lights on a timer when away from your property.
Make sure the timing of lights makes logical sense. (bedroom
light turned off after living space etc.)
3. All deadbolts should be more than 1 inch deep
4. All windows should be secured/locked/pinned when nobody is home to safeguard property.

existence for more than 30 years. They have a great reputation with residents and they are willing to do free estimates for

My Favorite Bookshelf by Mike Esposito

Moving from one residence to another (which I am in the process of doing) can be a hectic experience and is made especially difficult when you have to let go of half the books accumulated
over eighteen years in a home that had an ample number of built in bookshelves and additional

overdue for a trip to Market Block Books, Moss Books, and the RCHS, RPI and HVCC bookstores as well as the fine used book stores in Troy including the Book Seller at the Troy Public
Library, (Burgh Branch), and the Book Outlet in the Atrium. Happy book shopping in Troy!

Little Italy Remembers . . .

During the past few weeks four long time residents of the neighborhood died. We remember
with respect Catherine (Kay) Weingartner Nichols of Ida Street, Catherine (Kay) Bevevino Colasessano formerly of Hill Street, Mary Greco Panza formerly of Fourth Street (lately of Kennedy Towers) and Peter Shaver of Second Street. Kay Nichols served for many years as President of the Washington Park Friendly Seniors and like her former neighbor Mary Panza was a
dedicated parishioner of St. Marys Church where both were active volunteers in the parish
community. Mary was always available to assist with mailings to neighbors during the years
South Central sponsored the Neighborhood Resource Center on Fourth and Adams a few doors
north of her residence. She also volunteered at Seton Health. Kay Colasessano, whose family,
the Bevevinos have lived for decades throughout Troys Little Italy neighborhood were consummate community volunteers. Kay worked for HVCCs Food Services. Her husband Phil
Colasessano was an accomplished musician in the Capital District. Peter Shaver served as Park
historian for the Washington Park Association, always made time to conduct tours of the
neighborhood, continually doing research on the parks former residents and their homes. We
offer their families and friends our sympathy at their loss
