Lynx Rufus High School Band Grading Policies

Grades will be based off the following factors:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Performances
Outside Rehearsal/Sectionals
Playing Tests
Signature Sheets
Participation in Class

1. Performances (25%)
Each student is required to attend all performances. Unless notified of an illness or family
emergency, students will not be excused from these performances. Students must work
out any other extra-curricular activities that may conflict with the dates of these
performances. Failure to attend these performances without notification to the head band
director will result in a grade of a zero.
Pleases Note: Students must be eligible to attend all football games, marching band
competitions, and the UIL contest in the spring. If a student is not eligible for any outside
school performances/ contests, it will not affect their grade in band. However, they may
be required to do extra homework such as recording themselves practicing.
2. Extra Rehearsals/ Weekly Sectionals (25%)
Extra rehearsals and weekly sectionals will be conducted outside of regular school hours
when in need to prepare for performances and contests. Each student is required to attend
these rehearsals and sectionals. Students are expected to show up to rehearsals/ sectionals
early in order to have time to take their instrument out of their locker, sit in their seat, and
begin warming up on their own. If a student misses a rehearsal or sectional they are
required to attend a make-up sectional.
3. Playing Tests (20%)
Playing tests consist of scales, exercises, and short passages of performance music. There
will be a playing test at the end of every grading period (every six weeks). Students who
miss a test are still required to pass off any material that is given.
When chair/ band placement (auditions) come around at the end of each semester please
note that these placements are not tests and do not affect the students grade. Students

will be placed in bands that are suitable for them and it will be determined by how much
they have improved and how well they perform the required audition music.
4. Signature Sheets (10%)
Throughout the year information will be sent home and students will be required to
obtain signatures signed by the parent so that we know, as directors, that the parents have
seen this information.
5. Participation in Class (10%)
Students are required to bring all materials (music, instrument, pencil, reeds, mouthpiece,
drumsticks, mallets) to class for a daily grade. As directors we expect our students to give
their best effort and play to their full potential.
