ELABORATE ACTIVITY 1
1. The plants in the model represent trees. Explain how trees prevent soil
erosion in intact rainforests.
Answer: Tree roots hold soil in place, and prevent it from being very soft also the
roots of the trees drink water from the soil which lessens the probability to have
floods. Tree branches help lessen the impact of rain on the soil.
2. How would the water cycle be altered in a denuded forest?
Answer: Trees serve an important role in water cycle by drawing water up
through their roots and release it into the atmosphere. In rainforests, much of
the water circulating through the regions ecosystem remains within the plants.
Deforestation contributes to a drier climate of the region by removing trees,
which makes difficult to hold as much water.
3. Explain how forest denudation result to flash floods.
Answer: One of the most important roles of forest is that it quickly absorbs water
in great amount and stores it during heavy rains. Regulation of water flow is
disrupted when a forest is removed, so that the affected region experiences
altering period of flood.
4. How would you explain the tragic event brought about by storms Ondoy and
Sendong in relation to this simple experiment?
Answer: The tragedy brought about by the storms is a result of deforestation.
Since the government is having a hard time stopping illegal logging it has now
affected us greatly through the flash floods. Through this simple experiment, we
can see that we need trees. It helps us prevent soil erosion and flash floods.
