ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Overview
Draw Paint 1 is a course that seeks to develop and refine high school students skills in
drawing and painting. The course is designed with 9th graders in mind with the standards based
on the Georgia Performance Standards for Fine Arts. In this course, learners will use variety of
methods and materials to plan and create several works of art; develop advanced vocabulary that
will help understand and talk about art; explore several styles and techniques; and critique
artworks, including students own works.
Context
Draw Paint 1, in the context of this course, is a seven-week fully online art course
requiring students to use both art and technology tools in order to be successful. The Blackboard
Coursesites Learning Management System (LMS) is what has been used to deliver the course.
The technology tools that students will need include Internet connected devices such as
computers, smartphone or tablets. Cameras will also be needed to take photos and videos of the
artworks made so that they can be uploaded and shared for feedback. The ability to communicate
online is essential. The course is designed to cater for the background and expectations of the
diverse racial and ethnic student population in Georgia high schools. Students will have the
opportunity express and promote their culture and beliefs in the execution of their work.
Assessment Practices
In other to ensure students effectively master the set standards, practice exercises run
throughout the course. Students will be able to measure their own success and have the
opportunity to improve through the feedback provided by the teacher and other students in the
class. Feedback from classmates will come through the online asynchronous discussions and the

synchronous class meetings held with the teacher. Students contribution to the discussion
forums will be guided by rubrics to ensure constructive feedback from students. There are multichoice quizzes to measure students knowledge and understanding with instant feedback
provided right after taking the quiz. Students will also use wikis to document their understanding
of the content of the course. Projects run throughout the course. Students will produce drawings
or paintings in each unit of the course to show the level of mastery of the techniques as
determined by the rubrics.
The course has an Introduction link that assesses student readiness for the course through
the Who I Am discussion forum, assessing students experiences with drawing and painting,
and a quiz to assess their level of technology use. The Unit 1 has a discussion forum for students
to share and obtain feedback on the preliminary drawings. There is also a dropbox for students to
turn in a compilation of drawings made by professional artists. Students will turn their final
project for the unit in the Gallery. Unit 2 has two discussion forums, a quiz and a gallery for
students work. There is one discussion forum, an assessment dropbox, and a gallery for Unit 3;
a quiz, wiki and a dropbox for Unit 4; two dropboxes, a discussion forum and a gallery for Unit
5; and two discussion forums, a dropbox and gallery for Unit 6. All the units have the
appropriate learning objectives listed to help students measure their own learning.
