Cylinder
It is the main body of an

engine in which piston

reciprocates to develop
power .
It can withstand with very
high pressure and
temperature (2800 c)
If cylinder block & crank
case are made integral ,
then the construction is
called monoblock
It should be good
conductor of heat
Generally material used is
cast iron
For heavy duty engines
alloy steels are used

Cylinder Arrangement

1. In line arrangement

In this type , a number

of cylinder are
arranged in a line i.e.,
placed side by side
vertically

Opposed cylinder type

Here the two cylinders

are arranged
horizontal opposite to
each other
They are placed 180

V-engine

Here two cylinders are

placed with their axes
at 60 deg
They are placed on a
common crank case
and crankshaft

Radial engine

They are arranged in a

radial fashion with a
common crankshaft
They are mainly used
in air craft engine

Piston
It is a reciprocating
part of the engine
Materials aluminium
alloys , cast steel ,
cast iron
Functions
It forms a tight seal
within the cylinder

Connecting rod
It is used to connect
piston to the
crankshaft
It converts
reciprocating motion
into rotary motion of
the crankshaft
Materials nickel
,chrome
Manufacturing
process- casting and
forging

Crankshaft
It is mounted on the
bearings
Convert s
reciprocating motion
into rotary motion
Materials alloy steel
or cast iron
It experiences
centrifugal forces

Valves

Each engine cylinder

has two valves
It is usually placed at
45 deg or 30 deg
Materials silicon
chrome steel
They are coated with
aluminium

Value Actuating
Mechanism

Side valve
mechanism
Over head valve
mechanism
Over head inlet &
side exhaust
