Assignment No. 3
(Due Date: Oct 14, 2014)
1. A storm gutter in Ottawa receives drainage from a 600 acres drainage area. The
profile of its longest drainage path length is shown as Profile A. The drainage
area is composed of different land use and its composition is as follows: 15%
downtown core; 20% light industry; 50% parks and the remaining is unimproved
areas. Determine the 25-year design flow of the storm gutter.

2. An agricultural watershed has the following hydrologic characteristics:

(a) a sub-area in fallow with hydrologic soil group B, covering 32% of the watershed.
(b) a sub-area planted with row-crops, contoured and terraced, in good hydrologic
condition with soil group C covering 68% of area.
Determine the runoff Q in cm if a 10.5 cm rainfall falls on this watershed.
Assume AMC-II condition exists in the watershed before the rainfall event.

3. (a) The hyetograph of a rainfall event which fell on a 10 km 2 watershed whose

surface was dry is as follows:

This rainfall event resulted in the volume of direct runoff of 3 cm. If the direct
runoff hydrograph is represented by a triangle with a base of 6 hours and a peak
flow occurring at 3 hours (mid point of the base). Compare the peak discharge
(m3/sec) of this hydrograph.
(b) A 6-hr unit hydrograph for a watershed is given below.

Determine the peak flow from the watershed corresponding to 5 inches of rainfall.
The runoff coefficient for the watershed is 0.4 and the baseflow is 250 ft 3/s
consistent throughout.
