conjunctions.
Sub skills: Using the past tense, positives and negatives.
1. Explain to students that a simple sentence contains a subject, a verb
and an object in that order. Explain the idea of conjunctions or words
that join simple sentences together to make compound ones.
E.g.
I ate a hamburger because I was hungry.
2. Have students work through the first sheet, joining the parts of
sentences together to make sensible statements. Suggested answers
below.
I went to see the doctor because I was sick.
I went to the doctor because it was a holiday.
I went to the doctor and it was a nice day.
I opened the door so I could go outside.
I opened the door because it was a nice day.
I opened the door because it was a holiday.
I opened the door and I could go outside.
I made some food because I was hungry.
We went to the park because it was a nice day.
We went to the park because it was a holiday.
We went to the park and I was sick
He didnt go to work because it was a holiday.
He didnt go to work because I was sick.
He didnt go to work and I was sick.
3. As students read the story get them to underline the simple sentences
and circle the compound ones. There are no complex sentences in this
story. They should write a short sentence to answer the final question.
4. The wife said You are going to die!
5. You could follow this up by discussing jokes in general. Tell a few of
your own and have students tell you theirs. This might be a good idea
for homework. Remember that lots of English jokes contain puns,
idioms or plays on language; avoid jokes like this at this level.

Joe and his wife went to see the doctor because Joe was
very sick. The doctor examined Joe and shook his head.
He was very sick. He asked Joe to leave the room so he
could talk to his wife alone.
Your husband is going to die if you dont help him, said
the doctor.
What should I do? said Joes wife.
He needs to relax so you should let him watch football
every night.
What else?
He needs good food so you should cook for him three
times a day.
Anything else I should do?
You should have sex with him more than twice a day.
On the way home in the car Joe asked,
Whats going to happen to me?
