Fluid Intake and Hydration Status in Elderly at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Mulia

During aging process, many physiological changes put the elderly at greater risk of dehydration. Decreasing sensation of thirsty can caused low fluid consumption in elderly and they may be purposely restrict the consumption in manner to lower frequency of urination. Maintaining fluid in body is essential for health. Objective: The purpose of this research was to determine distribution of fluid intake and hydration status in elderly who lived in Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Mulia Dharma Kubu Raya Regency. Methods: This research was descriptive study with cross sectional approach. Data were collected from 41 elderly people aged 60-79 years old. Data were recruited with consecutive sampling technique.This research was implemented in Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Mulia Dharma Kubu Raya on February 2014. Fluid intake was measured by food frequence quesioner (FFQ) and hydration status was detected by urin chart.Results: There were 65,4% elderly with inadequate fluid intake and 61% elderly had dehydration, among them were 34,1% male and 26,8% female with dehydration, dehydration occurred in 4,9% elderly with malnutrition, 29,3% in elderly with risk of malnutrion and 26,8% in elderly with normal status nutrition.Conclusions:Inadequate fluids intake can evoke dehydration in elderly. It makes fluid consumption should be seriously noted, hydration status can be monitored by using urin chart.
