systems, which carry out specific functions necessary for our
everyday living.

For the purpose of the assignment we will only focus on the main
organs within these systems. We will identify and discuss the
following organs:

Brain
Lungs
Heart
Liver
Stomach
Spleen
Pancreas
Kidneys
Large Intestine
Small Intestine
Bladder

The Nervous System

The Nervous System consists of THE BRAIN (the major organ of the Nervous
System), Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nerves. The system detects and
processes sensory information that activates bodily responses

Location: In the Cranium (Skull)

Definition: The Brain receives, sorts and interprets sensations from the
nerves that extend from the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
to the rest of the body; it initiates and coordinates nerve signals involved in
activities such as speech, movement, thought and emotion.

A Vertical section through the human brain, showing the main areas

Main Function: The brain is arguably the most important and complex organ
in the body. Our brains basically control our body and house your mind
Physical Description: Pale gray, the size of a small cauliflower (the average
adult brain weighs about 1.4kg) and the texture of pate

Significant Features and Functions: The brain is made up of many areas that
work together:

Cortex: the outermost layer of brain cells thinking and voluntary

movements start here
The brain stem situated between the spinal cord and the rest of the
brain basic functions are controlled here (breathing and sleep)

The Basal Ganglia, situated in the center of the brain is a cluster of

structures that coordinates messages between multiple brain areas
The Cerebellum, at the back and base of the brain is responsible for
our balance and coordination

The brain is also divided into several lobes:

Frontal Lobes Problem Solving, judgment and motor functions

Parietal Lobes Manages sensation, handwriting and body position
Temporal Lobes Involved in Memory and Hearing
Occipital lobes Visual processing system
