First Day Procedures

Beginning of Class Routine
At the beginning of each class, I will greet students at the door. The students will:
Walk into the classroom.
Turn in homework in your class periods homework tray.
If you were previously absent, pick up any missed work in the absent folder.
Sit down in your seat.
Check agenda for the day (posted on the board) and get any needed materials.
Put backpack and other unneeded materials/items under your seat.
Begin bell work.

The Daily Agenda

The class agenda will be posted on the front board in the same place every day. The agenda will
include the following three things:
Bell Work
Schedule
Learning Objective

Bell Work
Every day, students will need to complete the assigned Bell Work. All Bell Work will be posted
on the front board as a part of the agenda. Follow this procedure:
After you have sat in your seat and looked at the agenda, begin working on the Bell
Work.
Bell Work is started before the class bell rings.
You will have about 2-5 minutes to complete the Bell Work.
Complete Bell Work assignment quietly.
Complete the Bell Work independently.
If you finish early, you may read a book of your choice silently.

Taking Attendance
Student Attendance will be done while students are completing their Bell Work assignment. I
will:
Walk around the classroom and check on each student.
Make a connecting comment to each student.
Take attendance while walking around the classroom.

The End of Class Routine

I will begin the End of Class Routine during the last 2-3 minutes of class.
Write down homework assignment (if applicable).
Return any shared classroom supplies back in their place.
Turn in work (if applicable).
Check work area to see if it is clean. If not clean, please clean the area.
Put all personal items in your backpack.
Wait in your seat to be dismissed.

Classroom Procedures
Getting Students Attention
I will say, I need 100% of you and hold up my hand. When students hear this and/or see my
hand in the air, the students will:
Stop what they are doing.
Give me their full attention.

Bathroom Breaks
Students are allowed to use the bathroom or get a drink of water after my lecture portion of class
(unless there is an emergency). Follow this procedure:
Hold up your index finger if you need to use the restroom or get a drink.
When I see your index finger in the air, I will grant permission to use the bathroom or get
a drink.
Write your initials and the time you leave on the bathroom break log on the student-work
desk and take the bathroom pass.
When you come back, record the return time next to your name and return the pass.
If I see that a student is abusing the bathroom break pass procedure, I have the right to take away
that students ability to use the bathroom break pass.

Organization of Desks
Students are responsible for returning the desks to their original place at the end of class.

Returning Papers
I will hand back any papers to the students during the Bell Work time. While handing back
papers, I will make a positive comment to each student about their work.

Keeping Students on Task

I will first refer back to the Getting Students Attention procedure. After I have the students
attention, I will begin the STOP method, where I will write STOP on the front board. Each time
students are off task I will cross out a letter. Once all of the letters in STOP are crossed out, the
students will stop the current activity and continue with a quiet activity.

Finishing Work Early

If a student finishes his/her work early, she/he has two choices:
Silently read.
Write in classroom journal.
Complete a free time activity from the student-work desk.

Missing Assignment Slip

If a student does not have the completed assignment due for the day, he/she is responsible for
filling out a Pink Slip immediately at the beginning of class (located next to the homework
trays). After the Pink Slip is filled out, the student must turn it in to the appropriate homework
tray designated for their class period. I will file the slip. The students are still able to complete
the assignment for late work. The information on the Pink Slip includes:
Name, class period, and date
Missing Assignment
Checkboxes for the student to indicate the reason for the missed assignment
A student signature line

Misbehavior Notice
When a student violates a rule or guideline, I will silently issue a Guideline Infraction Notice.
This is to serve as a warning to the student. On this form, I will include:
The date and the students name
Checkboxes to indicate my instruction to the student (Please correct your behavior or
Please return to task)
The guideline infraction
Checkbox to indicate if the student needs to see me after class
Space for filling out the results of the student-teacher conference
Student signature line
Checkbox to indicate if the student needs a parent signature
Parent signature line

Classroom Phone Ringing

I will be responsible for answering the classroom phone during the non-lecture portion of my
lesson. However, during the lecture portion of my lesson, an assigned student will be
responsible for answering the classroom phone. The designated student will answer the phone as
quietly as possible in the following way:
Room ____, Student speaking.
Just a minute, please. Let me tell the teacher.
The teacher is coming to talk to you.
The teacher will call you back at the end of class time. May I ask who is calling please?
This script will be taped to the phone for the student to reference.

Emergency Preparedness
I will follow the district and campus policies.

Student Procedures
Turning in Notes and Forms
Students will turn in any notes and forms in the designated Notes from Home basket on the
student-work desk. This is not where schoolwork and homework is turned in. The following
items are to be placed in the Notes from Home basket:
Permission slips
Written note from parent or guardian
Absence excuse
Volunteer form

Classroom Tardiness
Any student who enters the class after the bell rings is tardy. If tardy, follow this procedure:
Walk into class as quietly as possible and take a tardy slip on the student-work desk.
Fill out tardy slip and place in Tardy Slip basket on the student-work desk
Go sit in your assigned seat.
Look at agenda for the day.
Join the activity in progress (the schedule is posted in the agenda).

Shared Class Supplies

On the student-work desk, there will be a shared classroom supplies area. When a student needs
to borrow an item from the shared class supplies, he/she needs to write their name on the board.
Students do not need permission to borrow from the shared class supplies. This can be done
before class and during class. At the end of class, return these items and erase your name from
the board. Items in the shared class supplies include:
Pencils, pens, markers, and highlighters
Lined Paper
Rulers

Replacing Dull or Broken Pencils

Students are allowed to use the electronic pencil sharpener located on the student-work desk
before class begins. After class begins, if a student needs to sharpen a pencil, he/she may do so
with a handheld pencil sharpener located on the student-work desk.

Turning in Homework
Students are responsible for turning in their homework at the beginning of the class. Students
are to turn in their homework in the appropriate tray designated for their class period.

Absent Work Folder

It is the students responsibility to make-up any missed work. There will be an Absent File on
the student-work desk, which will include manila folders for the dates of the month. Follow this
procedure:
Check the Absent File.
Find the manila folder for the date that you were absent.
Collect the missed work for the date you were absent.
For every 1 day you miss, you will have 1 day to make up the work. (Or follow district
policy.)
Students are also able to check for missed work while absent on the classroom website.

Late Work
Students are allowed to turn in late work for a grade within the allotted time frame. All late work
needs to have a parent signature in the top left corner of the assignment.
One day late = 25% off
Two days late = 50% off
Three days late = 75% off
Four or more days late = no credit
(Follow campus/district policy)

Work in Progress
Every student will have a writing portfolio in my class.

Paper Headings
In the upper right hand corner of the lined paper, write the following in this order:
Name
Class Period
Date

Cellphones in the Classroom

When students walk into my classroom, they need to be turned off or in silent mode (silent mode
does not mean vibrate mode) and stored in backpack. If the lesson for the day requires students
to use their cellphones, I will state it in the agenda. When this is the case, the students will turn
their cellphones on silent mode and set them under their desk until the devices are needed during
the lesson. When I allow the use of cellphones during a lesson, I expect students to only use it
for schoolwork. If I feel that a student is violating this expectation, he/she will be asked to place
the cellphone in a bin on the student-work desk. Only when class is dismissed at the end of the
class period is the student allowed to retrieve the cellphone.

Instruction Procedures
Note Taking
Students are responsible for their own note taking. In my class, each student must use the
Cornell Note-Taking Method. The students will divide a sheet of note paper into three sections
with the dimensions listed below:

Class Discussions
When having class discussions, every student will participate. I will ensure this by using craft
sticks or index cards with the students names on them. During the discussion, I will draw one
stick or index card and call on the student to participate. I will repeat this process until all the
sticks or cards have been drawn. When a student is speaking, everyone must show that person
respect by not interrupting the student and keeping all eyes and attention on the student.

process for reading. I will provide worksheets that lay out this method when I assign a reading
from the textbook. The SQ4R method is:

Review Review your notes and fill in any missing information.
Reflect Mentally think about the information and connect ideas to form a deeper
meaning.

Test/Quiz Taking
Before taking a test, I will write a test agenda on the board that will include:
When the test will take place in the class period
How long the testing period will last
What to begin working on upon completion of the test
Students are to follow this procedure during a test:
Turn OFF all cell phones and put inside backpack.
Have two pencils on desk and other necessary materials (I will list on the test agenda).
