AE111: Basics of Mechanical Engineering

First semester (Aug- Nov 2013)

Tutorial: 2 (Gear Trains)

1. A simple Gear train is shown in Fig 1. It consists of 3 gears A, B & C. A has 40

teeth, B has 10 teeth, C has 60teeth. A is connected to the input shaft rotating at
-100 rpm. C is connected to the output shaft. Determine the speed and sense of
rotation of the output shaft.

gear (cw). The symbol t indicates the number of teeth for each gear. Draw the
direction of rotation of each gear.
3. The gear system shown in Fig3 is added to motor of a hacksaw so that its speed
can be controlled. Calculate the Velocity ratio of gears A & B. Also Calculate the
speed and direction of rotation of each gear, if gear D rotates(cw).

4. The speed ratio of a reverted gear train is 12. The module of Gears A & B is 3.125
mm and of Gears C & D is 2.5 mm. Calculate the number of teeth on each gear,
given the centre distance between the two shafts are at 200mm.
5. In a reverted gear train, input shaft is rotating at 2000 rpm, the no. of teeth on
gear2 is 20, and the number of teeth on gear5 is 40. Find the highest and the
lowest output speed obtainable, if the tooth number on gear3 and 4 are to be no
fewer than 20 and no more than 60. (all gears have the same module)
6. An Epicyclic gear train consists of 3 gears A, B & C as shown in the fig.4. Gear A
has 72 internal teeth and gear C has 32 teeth. Gear B meshes with both A & C
and is carried by an arm EF which rotates at 18 rpm about centre of A. Assuming
Gear A to be fixed. find the speed of gears B & C.

7. An epicyclic gear train as shown in Fig. 5 consists of an arm and 2 gears A & B
having 36 & 45 teeth. The speed of arm is 120 rpm in clockwise direction about
centre of gear A which is fixed. (i). Determine the speed of gear B. (ii).Determine
the speed of gear B, in which gear A also rotates with a speed of 320 rpm.
8. Determine the module of a pair of gears whose centre distance is 58mm. the gears
have 18 teeth and 40 teeth respectively.
9. Two gears having an angular velocity of 3:1 have a centre distance of 136mm. if
the module of gears is 4mm, how many teeth are there in each gear.
10. Design a simple spur gear for a ratio of +8:1 and module of 3.
11. Design a compound spur gear train for a ratio of 150:1 and module of 4. Sketch
the gear train.
