4 Higher-Order Thinking Skills - model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools
and resources to support and enhance higher order thinking skills (e.g., analyze,
evaluate, and create); processes (e.g., problem-solving, decision-making); and mental
habits of mind (e.g., critical thinking, creative thinking, metacognition, self-regulation,
and reflection).
Reflection
The Multimedia Design Project was completed in ITEC 7445. The goal of this
assignment was to create a WebQuest that could be used with our students and use
technology to foster the use of higher order thinking skills. This reflection discusses
how this artifact was able to do that.
The CPR WebQuest created took students through the process of researching a topic,
and synthesizing that research to create a script or a storyboard that represents the
appropriate response to an emergency scenario. The students then took their script or
storyboard and filmed, acted out, edited and produced an educational video, which was
shared with students in their class and throughout our school. I created an introductory
video using MovieMaker in an effort to model what was expected of the students for the
assignment. I then assumed the role of facilitator and troubleshooter while the students
worked through this project.
From completing this artifact, I was able to learn a lot about designing web-based
projects for my students. I learned that there was a lot of work on the front end
associated with creating the project, but it made for a seamless integration of
technology within the assignment. In an effort to improve the artifact, I would have
either created or embedded instructional videos, which show how to properly perform
the skills the students were responsible for utilizing in their video. While the majority of
the students did a great job with their videos, there were technical issues that would
misinform the viewer when demonstrating how to properly perform the skills. These
issues did provide an avenue of discussion for the students when critiquing the other
presentations.
The work that went into creating this artifact made a positive impact on student learning
because the students were able to learn the content associated with the content
standards while also utilizing several of the ISTE-S standards to do it. This assignment
also fostered the use of higher order thinking skills because students were required to
research their topic and then synthesize their research to create an instructional video.
Students also learned a lifesaving skill that helps prepare them to respond in an
emergency situation should they ever find themselves in one. The impact of this
assignment was assessed when the students completed the CPR skill and written
summative assessments.
