4.4 Indeterminate Forms and L'Hospital's Rule
4.4 Indeterminate Forms and L'Hospital's Rule
1. Overview
LHospitals Rule
. The trick is
This section gives us a way to evaluate limits of functions that look like 00 or
to use LHospitals rule (pronounced low-pea-tahl, not la-hospital), which says that you can take
the derivative of the top and the derivative of the bottom and then take the limit of that. More
precisely:
f (x)
g(x)
xa
lim g(x) = 0
xa
xa
lim g(x) =
xa
xa
f (x)
1
g(x)
or
g(x)
1
f (x)
2. Examples
1.) Evaluate the following limit:
lim
x2
x+2
x2 + 3x + 2
We can do this problem two ways, one using the methods of Chapter 2, and the other
using LHospitals rule. Well do both ways.
Always we start by plugging in the number:
2 + 2
= 00
4 + (6) + 2
So we can try to factor and cancel:
lim
x2
x+2
x+2
1
1
= lim
= lim
=
= 1
x2 + 3x + 2 x2 (x + 2)(x + 1) x2 x + 1
2 + 1
2 ln x
(ln x)2 H
((ln x)2 )0
= lim
= lim
0
x
x
x
x
(x)
1
lim
1
x
= lim
2 ln x
x
Now this limit is simpler than the one we started with, but we still cant evaluate it
immediately because, as x the top and bottom still both go to infinity. We try
using LHospitals rule again:
2
2 ln x H
(2 ln x)0
2
x
= lim
=
lim
= lim
=0
x
x
x 1
x x
x
(x)0
lim
x0
x
As x 0, csc x = sin1 x and cot x = cos
sin x , so we have: . We want to
rewrite this to get a quotient.
1
cos x
1 cos x
lim (csc x cot x) = lim
= lim
x0
x0 sin x
x0
sin x
sin x
Now notice that as x 0 the top 0 and the bottom 0, so we have: 00 and we
can use LHospitals rule:
sin x
1 cos x H
(1 cos x)0
0
= lim
= lim
= =0
x0 cos x
x0
x0
sin x
(sin x)0
1
lim
So we can conclude:
lim (csc x cot x) = 0
x0
Notice that we could have evaluated this limit using the tricks from Chapter 3:
1 cos x
= lim
x0
x0
sin x
lim
1cos x
x
sin x
