The promises of God give us hope for the future.
I. Things of note from the context.
A. Grace and peace come in knowing God (v. 2).
B. We have been given everything we need for life and
godliness (v. 3).
1. Godliness is a reverence for God as Supreme Being.
2. Gods power gives us these things.
3. Knowledge of God is referred to as the key (the
means) to obtaining what we need for life and godliness.
C. In the promises God has committed Himself to doing good
things for us.
II. God has given us promises.
Some OT promises may have an indirect application for us,
but most were meant for Israel.
A. His promises come in different forms.
1. Promise (This is what I will do for you). John 14:3;
Hebrews 13:5; 1 John 1:9.
2. Prophecy (This is what I will do in the future). Acts
1:11; Galatians 6:7; Revelation 20:10.
3. Statement of purpose (I do these things). Matthew
7:1-2; 16:18; 2 Corinthians 5:17.
4. Statement of fact (This is the way it is). Matthew
7:26-27; John 12:24.
B. His promises are described as being:
1. exceedingly great great in effect (1 Cor 2:9).
2. precious we can actually be useful to Him.
C. His promises enable us to be partakers of the divine nature
through claiming and acting upon them.
D. God has given us many promises and since these promises
are meant to shape us to be what God wants us to be, I have
the Challenge!
