The Meaning of Leadership

 Leadership is both a process and a property. As

a process, leadership involves the use of non-
coercive influence. As a property, leadership is
the set of characteristics attributed to someone
who is perceived to use influence successfully.
Leadership vs. Management
Trait Approaches to Leadership

 The trait approach to leadership

attempted to identify stable and enduring
character traits that differentiated effective
leaders from non-leaders.
Behavioral Approach to Leadership

 The behavioral approach to leadership is

very similar to the trait approach in that
they both try to differentiate effective
leaders from non-leaders.
The LPC Theory of Leadership
 The least preferred co-worker (LPC) scale
presumes to measure a leader’s motivation. For
example, three of these items used in the LPC scale:

Pleasant 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Unpleasant
Inefficient 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Efficient
Unfriendly 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Friendly
The Path Goal Theory of Leadership
 It suggests that effective leaders clarify the paths
(behaviors) that will lead to desired rewards
(goals).
 It also argues that subordinates are motivated by
their leader to the extent that the behaviors of that
leader influence their expectancies.
Vroom’s Decision Tree Approach to
Leadership

 It is the third contemporary approach to

leadership.
 It attempts to prescribe how much participation
subordinates should be allowed in making
decisions.

which are the following:
