POSTING

THE
PROBLEM

DISCUSSION POINTS
1.Is the arrangement of
particles in the solid,
liquid and gaseous states
the same?
2.In which of these states
do particles remain very
close to each other?
3.What about the shape
and volume?

1.No
2.In solid states, particles
are closely packed.
3.Solid has definite shape
and volume . Liquid does
not have definite shape
but has definite volume.
Gases do not have
definite shape and
volume

CONSOLIDATION
In solid states, particles are closely
packed . So, it has a definite shape and
volume. In liquids, distance between
the molecules is more, compared to
that of solids, so it doesnt have definite
shape but has definite volume. In
gaseous state, distance is the greatest,
compared to the other two states.
Hence, it doesnt have either a definite
shape or a definite volume

ACTIVITY 1

DISCUSSION POINTS
1.Which form of energy is
responsible for the change of state
of matter?
2.What are the changes that
happen to the following properties
when heat is absorbed :
a)Energy of particles
b)Distance between the
particles
c)Attraction between the
particles
d)Movement of particles
3. What do you observe from the
diagram?

1. Heat energy

2. a) Increases
b)Increases
c)Decreases
d)Increases

3. Substance changes its

state to another state

CONSOLIDATION
When a substance has a tendency to
change its state to another state, it is
called the change of state.

ACTIVITY 2

DISCUSSION POINTS
1. What is the state of
matter before it is
heated?
2.In what state does
it change after
heating?
3.What do you
observe from the
experiment?

1. Solid state
2. Gaseous state
3. Solid camphor
directly changes to
gaseous state

CONSOLIDATION
Certain solids uposn heating directly
changes into the vapour state, without
passing through the liquid state. This
process is called sublimation.
