Divergent Analysis

The first thing I personally noticed when watching this trailer was the use of nondiegetic sound, which is used to both create the atmosphere for the trailer but
also to build up the suspense. There is a much quieter sound when less
important aspects are being spoken or shown by a drum like sound when vital
information is shown, by having this sound it ensures the audience attention is
fixed and there is no distraction. It is occupied with the diegetic sound of
dialogue which gives narrative enigmas and hooks to what is going to take place.

For a sense of mise-en-scene and use of colour this is one of the most interesting
screenshots I have looked at throughout my research purely for the smack in the
face of connotations. The colour palette is a dark grey, in both the clothing and
the buildings themselves. This is symbolic to the times and events taking place,
it connotes that these people have had everything stripped away from them, all
happiness and life. There is no individuality within this shot, showing the pure
entrapment these people are living in. The box like houses resemble prison cells
which not only reinforces the entrapment but also the lack of money within this
area, which is due to the control of government. The people themselves look
very small compared the large scale of buildings around them suggesting there
are overpowered and drowning in industrialisation, which sends out a very
political message to the audiences. By being introduced to these people through
a fading clip, we are shown straight away which side we should be on.

Divergent Analysis

This is a very short clip shown through a cross cut transition and if you were to
blink it would be missed. By it gives a huge narrative hint of what is about to
happen. Whereas before we were shown the people being towered over by large
dull buildings we now see her within them on a high level. She looks over them
as if the tables have turned and she may have more power than before which is
the main theme of the film. There is a blue sky but that is slightly hidden by the
building suggesting the industry is still blocking out the good times but we
assume from this image this protagonist is going to change that. There is a
sound bridge voice over which states youre different again just helping us see
that is going to stand for change.

Again this is a very

short clip although
shows that there is
a battle to take
place, which puts
the audience on
edge waiting for
what is about the
happen. The use of
weaponry shows
the intensity of
what is about to
take place and the
danger that is due
to come in a result of this. Theyre dressed in all black which is used to connote
theyre the bad guys and we should be wary of them. At this stage the sound
bridge has increased in pace, to show that the interesting/ important parts have
begun.

Divergent Analysis

We are positioned on a very low angle when looking at the protagonist who is
waving a flame flag, this makes the audience feel as if we are victorious in the
battle we went with her. The building has reflections of light on it which are red
showing not only danger but passion for the battle theyre facing. We feel as an
audience that we want to follow her and by waving the flame she is summoning
us all in. Having her on a higher level shows her power and influence on people
following her. In this screen shot she also looks as if the fire may be coming out
her hand implying she is something different and unseen before again a main
theme for the film.
