L AUREN PETTITT

Women in Black
(2012)
This pre-existing shot is commonly seen in
horror genre, the use of reflection to reveal an
antagonist makes the audience unsure of
whether theyre actually there or not. I was
influence by Women in Black (2012) as this
film using a lot of this idea of filming to make
the audience on edge to whether its in the
protagonist head or not. I wanted to create the
same effect to make the audience question is
it real or not.

Harry Potter and the Deathly

Hallows (2015)
This high camera angle is used to show the
vulnerability of the characters, similar to the shot in
Harry Potter I used this within my film to show the
protagonist kneeling at a grave stone the narrative
enigma as of why is a key element within this shot.
The high camera angle shows this is a sentimental
moment but makes the audience feel on edge as we
are shown the characters with only their backs
showing which again symbolises vulnerability. This
plays on Maslows need for safety resulting in the
audience fearing what could happen next.

Doctor Who
Although this is not a film Doctor Who had a
massive influence on my work. This shot in
particular helped me massively when
incorporating the extreme close up of an eye.
The shot from Doctor Who shows a extreme
close up of an eye and the Time Vortex is
shown within the eye. My show we are shown
the antagonist. The meaning behind this shot
is that the antagonist has got inside his head
and she is everywhere again linking to the idea
taken from Women in Black- the audience is
made to question whether it is all in the
protagonists head. The use of dark lighting is a
common convention throughout the horror
genre and the dilated pupil suggests fear of a
spike in emotions.

Inglorious Bastards (2009)

I used a point of view shot in a low angle to
empathise the position of the antagonist. The
audience arte positioned underneath the man
and in a vulnerable position similar to the shot
used in Inglorious Bastards. This means the
characters have direct mode of address with
the audience which can be intimidating and un
settling for the audience. This point of view
shot is commonly used to show the dangerous
characters meaning I have followed the
conventions.

The vow (2012)

The use of using old images to show reflection and
regret is a common convention within a variety of
different genres. I have included a close up of an
older image of the antagonist in my film looking
happy and innocent, the audience can assume it is
the boy holding the image. This gives the narrative
enigma of is there more to his sadness over her
death as this shot is frequently used to show regret.
I have taken influences from films outside of my
genre as I feel that way I didnt stick all the
conventions of the horror genre and allowed myself
to incorporate different and interesting ideas. This
also means my target audience is opened up more.

Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban

Again this shot is a pre-existing convention
whenever films are trying to imply danger. The
idea of a swing is typically linked with children
playing and happiness so when the swing is
shown empty and still moving we are made to
feel wary of what is making that happen. The
image of an empty swing also has some
much darker connotations and is often used to
connotate missing children or danger to
children. For example in Harry Potter the swing
is shown to move and then danger comes
straight after. My antagonist is shown to walk
away from the swing connotating she is
leaving behind her happiness and childhood to
something else linking to todorov theory
showing the disruption of equilibrium.
