Specific Objectives:
Students should be able to:
1. Define and differentiate between the terms bit and byte.
2. Identify and explain the features of the different number systems
used to represent data, namely; binary, decimal, octal and
hexadecimal.
3. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to convert decimal
numbers to binary, octal and hexadecimal.
4. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to convert binary numbers
to decimal.
5. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to convert octal and
hexadecimal numbers to decimal.
6. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to convert octal and
hexadecimal numbers to binary and vice versa.
7. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to convert octal numbers to
hexadecimal and vice versa.
8. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to add and subtract binary
numbers.
9. Illustrate and explain the steps taken to represent +ve and ve
numbers in sign & magnitude and twos complement.

Brain storm for definition and difference between bit and byte.
Brain storm and discussion using guided discovery; Objective 2.

Lesson 4: Objectives 8, 9
Discussion & Illustration using guided discovery; steps taken to
convert numbers as well as add and subtract binary numbers.

Culminating Activities:
Lesson 1:
Students will be asked to differentiate between bit and byte, and
to list the features of each number system based on discussion.
Lesson 2:
Students will be asked to:
1. Convert 2110 to binary, octal and hexadecimal.
2. Convert 101012 to decimal.
Lesson 3:
Students will be asked to:
1. Convert 258, 1516 and 101012 to decimal.
2. Convert 258, 1516 to binary.
3. Convert 101012 to hexadecimal and octal.
4. Convert 258 to hexadecimal.
5. Convert 1516 to octal.
Lesson 4:
Students will be asked to:
1. Add and subtract 100102 and 110112.
2. Represent -31 and 36 in Sign and magnitude and Twos
Complement.
