CHE 503 FLUID FLOW

Tutorial Chapter 2
Given: water = 1000 kg/m3 ; water = 1 mN s/m2
1. Water (T=20 oC) flow at a rate of 0.05 m3/s in a 20 cm asphalted cast iron pipe. What is
the head loss per kilometer if the viscosity of water (T= 20 oC) is equivalent to 1 mNs/m2?
2. Water flows in a 50 mm pipe, 100 m long, whose roughness e is equal to 0.013 mm. If the
pressure drop across this length of pipe is not exceed 50 kN/m 2, what is the maximum
allowable water velocity?
3. Water is pumped to the housing area which is situated 50 m above the level of storage
tank. The mass flow rate of water is 20 kg/s, The diameter of the pipe is10 cm and the
roughness is 0.0005 m. Determine the pressure drop in the pipe.
4. 0.2 m3/s recycle water containing hardness (=1250kg/m3 and = 1.5 mNs/m2) is pumped
to the top of washing tank to remove hardness through a 50 m pipe length (id=200mm).
Water flow in and out from washing tank through a get valve and the fittings is using
elbow standard radius.
a) Determine pressure loss due to friction from A to B (consider friction by the washing
tank is 200 times pipe diameter.
b) Determine the power required to pump the water due to the head loss cause by the
total friction.

5. 98 % purity of sulphuric acid is pumped at a rate of 4.5 tonnes/h to a storage tank via a
12.5 mm id. stainless steel pipe. The pipe is 30 m long and it is connected to tank 12 m
above the ground level. Given: H2SO4 = 1840 kg/m3 ; H2SO4 = 25 mN s/m2
a) Calculate the total pressure drop across the pipeline.
b) If the same acid is pumped to the storage tank with different orientation of the pipe, 18
m horizontal and 12 m vertical. Analyze the difference in total pressure drop for pipe
orientationmm
